Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Hunter started sailing at the age of 6. Began competing in the Optimist at the age of 8, placing 5 th in 2009 at the Opti Provincials and 1 st place in the 2010 Richardson Regatta. After outgrowing the Optimist, he shifted into a laser for a couple summers but was drawn to the speed and fury of the 29er, sailing it once at Zig Zag Yacht Club with Willie MacDonald. He never thought he would get the chance to sail it again. Until that fateful day, Brigitte Smutny needed a skipper for one of her 29er sailors and he responded without hesitation.
Now competing in the 29er Class, Hunter placed 9 th in 2013 Canada Summer Games. Continued onto CORK International, that same year placing no where near the top he learned a lot about what it means to compete at an international level. Following that, he continued to train and compete locally, provincially, and nationally. In 2017, he then crewed for his brother at the Canada Games where they placed 6 th . Before becoming Head Coach of Sailing, in addition to training and competing, he also coached the Race Team at R.LW.Y.C.
Hunter has an incredible passion for sailing and looks forward to using his experience towards the growth and competitive development of our Provincial Team.
