How do I become a Sailing Instructor?
The CANSail Programs have been developed by Sail Canada to ensure safety and consistent instruction to all students across Canada to promote the growth of safe and fun small-boat sailing!
Sail Manitoba provides Sail Canada instructor development and provides support materials to instructors and coaches to retain sailors in our sport, develop high performance athletes, teach the skills needed to enjoy sailing as a life long activity, and encourage the support of sailing through a lifetime.
Steps to Becoming a Certified Sailing Instructor
- Completing Prerequisites
- Fundamental Clinic
- Technical Clinic
- Evaluation
- Pay annual instructor dues to Sail Canada

Instructor & Coaches Information
CANSail 1 & 2 Instructor
Instructors who successfully complete this course will be qualified to teach beginner participants at the CANSail 1 & 2 Level, and have access to valuable CANSail Instructor Tools. Minimum age for this clinic is 16 years of age.
CANSail 3 & 4 Instructor
Instructors who successfully complete this course will be qualified to teach participants at the CANSail 3 & 4 Level and have access to valuable CANSail Instructor Tools.
CANSail 5 & 6 Instructor
Instructors who successfully complete this course will be qualified to teach participants at the CANSail 5 & 6 Level and have access to valuable CANSail Instructor Tools.
