Boating Safety Certification

YOU'LL NEED "THE CARD"

For more information call the office of the Manitoba Sailing Association at (204) 925-5648 or email sailingadmin@sport.mb.ca.

Who needs a Pleasure Craft Operator Card?

  • Previously any person of any age could legally operate any vessel with any size engine! To reduce the number of boating accidents, government legislation has established new regulations determining who can operate what type of vessel - and the standard they must achieve.
  • If you, or any member of your family, operate a power-driven vessel or a personal watercraft you are required by law to obtain a Pleasure Craft Operator Card and carry it with you at all times. The requirements will be phased in over 10 years, beginning with youth born after April 1, 1983.
  • To date Any Person operating a power driven boat under 4 meters will require the 'Card"
On September 15, 2009 Any Person operating a power driven boat will require the 'Card'
  • Previously-taken boating safety courses may be recognized, and experienced boaters may take a challenge test without taking a course.
  • Foreign visitors bringing a pleasure boat to Canada will be granted a grace period of 45 consecutive days.
  • People renting a vessel must complete a dockside checklist.

Where can I take courses?

  • Courses will be offered both separately by individual instructors and in conjunction with CYA Learn to Cruise, Learn to Powerboat and Learn to sail courses offered by MSA Clubs.
  • We offer several options:
    • The Full Course for those with limited experience
    • The Basic Course for those who have some boating experience
    • The Refresher Course for those who have experience and just need a brush up
    • The Challenge Exam for people who are comfortable with their knowledge and can simply write the exam.
  • New dates are being added regularly. Courses can be set up for groups at their own location if desired. Click here for course schedule.

Why worry about Boat safety?

  • There are about 200 boat fatalities each year in Canada.
  • There are 6,000 boat related accidents each year.
  • Uneducated boaters experience 5 times as many fatalities as educated boaters.
