RACING NEWS

Buffalo Cup

The annual Buffalo Cup at the Winnipeg Sailing Centre at Fort Whyte Alive took place on June 4. The winds were light but we got 5 races in. Congratulations to the winner of the Buffalo Cup Charles Burns Jr. and Robert Ewanchuk.

Team Scavenger Hunt

Team Rep Dylan McMorris organized a Scavenger Hunt for Team Toba in the Assiniboine Park. Clearly the athletes are as competitive on land as on the water. Thanks to Penny for organizing a great BBQ.

Navy League Cadet Sail Training

24 members of the Navy League Cadets took sailing lesson s at the WSC for two Saturdays in June. For the first session our instructors took them out in 420s and although the wind was equally strong for the second session, the sailors were able to go out in Prams . Way to go Cadets!

Falcon Cup

Great wind and lots of boats for the first Falcon Cup. Congrats to winner Tanja Smutny, second Kyle Ross and third Robert Ewanchuk.

Falcon Open

Thanks to Doug Bell and his crew for organizing the annual Falcon open regatta. Congratulations to winners 29ers Jocelyn McLaren and Vanessa Stewart, second Radial Tanja Smutny and third 29er Dylan McMorris and Ian Fast.

Power Smart Manitoba Games Qualifiers

The qualifiers for the Games are well on their way and we have already five teams selected. One team consists of two male athletes, two female athletes, one coach, and one manager.

1. Qualifier for the Eastman Region at the Pinawa Sailing Club
Captain Reid, newly certified white sail coach, and his crew put on a good show and had nine sailors signed up to try out for the Games. We lost three at the end because the wind was a bit too strong but the rest battled it out in six races. Great organi z ation and a lots of enthusiasm at the beautiful site of the Pinawa Sailing Club.

2. Qualifier for Winnipeg and Central Region at the WSC
This was our biggest qualifier so far with 23 athletes registered and at the end of a no wind day we managed to drift through 12 races, six for the Winnipeg region and six for the Central region. We qualified three teams for the Winnipeg, Central and Host region s .

3. Qualifier for Parkland Region at Lake of the Prairies in Roblin
At pretty Lake of the Prairies, in steady wind of 10-15 knots, we sailed six races in no time. There was lots of excitement amongst the young sailors and parents. Cory and her mom Linda just returned from the instructor clinic as certified white sail coaches and are planning to start up a yacht club at their lake.

4. Qualifier for Interlake at the Gimli Yacht Club
Glenn Penner was the master of organi z ation and the seven registered kids just had to hop in the boats and compete. The wind was light but we were able to sail six races. Team Interlake is ready for the challenge and will be training for the time remaining to the games.

Instructor Clinic at Zig Zag Yacht Club

Our annual Coaches and Instructor clinic was held from June 23-27. Ten head instructor were certified in the Program Manager Module, nine were certified as White Sail Coaches, ten as Bronze Sail Coaches and 19 instructors took the Wet Feet Module. Thanks to Manager Ray and Darrell Stewart for their help and for organi z ing the clinic. A big thank you to the Zig Zag YC for letting us use their facility.
