The first 2016 Sail Canada regional championship kicked off with Sail West at Gimli Yacht Club! Teams from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, BC, including one athlete from Nova Scotia, had been on site training since Wednesday, in preparation for racing over the weekend.
The event, which also included the Laser Canadian Championships, was the official test event for the 2017 Canada Summer Games, taking place next August in Winnipeg. A full team of volunteers and officials was hard at work ensuring everything went off without a hitch, all part of the preparations that are well underway for the Games next summer.
With medium conditions on Saturday and Sunday, racing was sure tight. Sailors who came out on top received prizes thanks to Helly Hansen.
A two day training camp and a one day regatta was held at the Falcon YC on July long weekend. With fireworks at Falcon Beach, a birthday party, the Fish Fly Cup and the final big trailer packing on Sunday, the team was well occupied and had a blast as always.
Congratulations to the winner in the single handed class Sharlene Telles-Langdon, followed by Gavin Robinson and Dave Telles-Langdon. The double handed class was won by Anthony Clark and James Thompson followed by Sara Telles-Langdon and Katie Sauer. The winner of the Opti class was Jonah Friesen, followed by Kendra Penner.
A huge thank you goes to the Falcon YC for welcoming us for six weeks. Especially to Dave Hudson, who is one of the biggest supporters of the sailing team. Another big thank you goes to the parents, who helped out to feed the team on the weekends, Rita Ingenmay, Teruka Schweizer, Jacquie Friesen, Paul and Barb Robinson and the Sauer and Telles-Langdon families. Despite worm infestation, forest fires and the latest flooding, the team had a lot of good training days. Next they are off to Pelican Yacht Club for the Big Bird Classics and a training camp.
Winner of the first ever High School Sailing Championships was Glenlawn Collegiate with Gavin Robinson and crew Savana Theodore-Maraj. The High School Sailing Championships will be taking place today, Thursday June 30, starting at 5:30pm at the Winnipeg Sailing Centre at Fort Whyte.
Come out and cheer on the four teams from the following High Schools:
Balmoral Hall School
Kelvin High School
Oak Park High School
Different kind of training conditions for the Sailing Team at Falcon YC last weekend. When we arrived at the Club, we discovered that some roads were washed out. The 14 boat trailer had to be parked on the highway. Luckily no damage was done to our boats but the marina was hit hard and the road over to the Penguin hotel was totally washed out. The creek was now a raging river spewing debris into the lake right at the launching area. The wind was blowing on shore, with all the debris pushed towards the Club, so very dangerous launching conditions.
And good thing we didn’t go out. The road to Falcon collapsed and the only way out was via West Hawk. Water was running already heavily over the road, so we decided to get out of dodge. We drove towards West Hawk just as they were closing the road. The road collapsed one hour after and the sailing team was happy to be home safely and not camping at the Falcon Yacht.
Team members are advised to pack -beside sunscreen and bug spray- a shovel to help our beloved Falcon YC to get their roads back. After all we are a small army and have lots of helping hands…..
The Summer of Sailing Regatta took place at the Falcon YC on June 18/19. The first race counted as the Falcon Cup, which was cancelled last weekend because of Thunderstorms and was won by Kayden Polacheck, James Thompson and Anthony Clark and Jonah Friesen. For the Summer of Sailing Trophy congratulations go to Kayden Polacheck for winning gold, Molly Ingenmey for silver and Dave Langdon for bronze. In the doublehanded class gold for James Thompson and Anthony Clark and silver for Sara Telles-Langdon and Katie Sauer. The Opti class was won by Tomas Green, followed by Jonah Friesen silver and Matthes Sauer bronze. A big thank you to the Robinson family for taking care of the team.
